A modern getaway in St. Andrews, NB inspired by the fishing sheds that have long shaped the local landscape.

Set in St. Andrews, NB, The Sheds of Charlotte County was designed as a vacation home that would not overwhelm the site while still feeling modern and connected to the local vernacular. Acre Architects describes the three gable forms as an homage to the fishing sheds of the client’s childhood, with a contemporary interior that contrasts the modest exterior.

Constructed by Rivir Builders, the house feels tucked into the trees, perfectly customized for the site. Weathered eastern cedar and simple rooflines give it a calm, coastal feel, while the glazing brings a sharper, more contemporary edge. We were proud to supply the Marvin windows and doors for the project, and this is exactly the kind of house where the Marvin Ultimate line feels at home.

Marvin Ultimate is a wood-clad collection, with wood interiors and the option of aluminum-clad exteriors, which makes a lot of sense in a project like this. It brings warmth and material depth inside, while the exterior gets the added durability and lower maintenance of extruded aluminum cladding. The Ultimate Collection is designed to work across a wide range of architectural styles, and that flexibility shows here.

The gable-end glazing is one of the best parts of the house. Those larger openings give the otherwise quiet forms a strong focal point and pull in the sky, trees, and water without changing the overall restraint of the architecture. Elsewhere, the wider water-facing windows keep the interiors bright and simple, with long views that stay front and centre. The Marvin Ultimate line is especially well-suited to this kind of project because it can handle a lot of customization while still keeping the detailing clean.

The large multi-slide door is another standout, designed for maximum indoor-outdoor living, with multiple panels that can either stack in view or disappear into a wall pocket. It uses an extruded aluminum exterior with a wood interior, which fits the material language of this house really well. In a project like The Sheds, that kind of door does a lot. It opens the main living spaces to the site, brings in more light, and makes the transition outside feel easier and more natural.

What makes the whole project work is that nothing feels overstated. The architecture stays quiet. The cedar suits the setting. Marvin's window & door package adds clarity, light, and openness without pulling attention away from the overall mood of the place. It's a house that feels sheltered when you approach it through the trees, then surprisingly open once you step inside.
