A modern retreat that soaks in the quiet rhythms of nature on the southeastern coast of Nova Scotia.
Tucked into the forest up a calm river, Sunnybrook Sanctuary is a custom home designed to embrace water views and feel one with the outdoors. The landscape leads the experience, with trees filter the morning light. Every room feels connected to the natural world just beyond the glass.
The design uses simple forms and natural materials to ground the home in its surroundings. Cedar shingles, warm wood interiors, and low stone retaining walls echo coastal architecture in Atlantic Canada, while the clean modern lines create a balanced, contemporary feel. A home that belongs to its site and feels lived in from the first moment.
Large Marvin™ direct glaze windows supplied by Ultimate Windows, Doors & More shape the entire interior experience. These high-performance fiberglass windows create an uninterrupted connection to the trees and shoreline, allowing natural light to flow in all year long. From the entryway to the river-facing living areas, the glass becomes a defining architectural element.
The central breezeway acts as the home’s main transition space. An enclosed walkway connects the two wings, with a large cantilevered entry door and sliding patio doors opening to views of the trees and the water beyond. Evening light warms the cedar and draws long shadows under the roofline. It creates an area that feels both sheltered and exposed in the best way. A place to slow down before stepping inside.
The interior invites the same sense of calm. Clean lines, soft textures, and a restrained palette allow the landscape to take the lead. Furnishings feel intentional rather than decorative. Nothing distracts from the view. From the water’s edge, the home appears reflective and modest, its glass catching hints of sky and forest.
Sunnybrook Sanctuary is more than a riverside retreat. It is a home shaped by thoughtful design, durable materials that age well in Canadian weather, and windows that support comfort, energy efficiency, and natural light all year long. A place for people who want to stay close to the seasons and close to what matters.
